Life can be unpredictable. One minute, you’re enjoying a trip overseas, and the next, you realize your Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) card has expired or gone missing. Suppose you’re a Canadian permanent resident outside the country without a valid PR card. In that case, you’ll need a Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) to return home.

What is a PRTD, or how does it work? Don’t worry, this guide breaks it down in simple, clear language so you can understand exactly what to do.

What is a PRTD?

Let’s start with the basics. A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is a temporary document issued by the Government of Canada to help permanent residents who are outside Canada return if they don’t have a valid PR card.

Without this document (or a valid PR card), you won’t be allowed to board a commercial flight, train, bus, or boat heading back to Canada. The PRTD is essentially proof of your permanent resident status while you’re traveling.

It’s typically valid for one single entry and should only be used to return home so you can apply for a new PR card once you arrive.

Who Needs a PRTD?

You’ll need a PRTD application if:

  • You are a Canadian permanent resident.

  • You are outside Canada.

  • Your PR card has expired, been lost, or stolen.

  • You need to travel back to Canada using a commercial vehicle.

It’s important to remember that you cannot apply for a PRTD while in Canada. This document is intended exclusively for individuals currently abroad who require proof of their status to return home.

If you’re still in Canada and your PR card is close to expiring, the smart move is to apply for a renewal before making any travel plans.

How to Apply for a PRTD

Applying for a PRTD Canada is a fairly straightforward process. Still, you need to be careful with the details to avoid delays. Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Download the Application

Visit the official Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website and download Form IMM 5524,  Application for a Permanent Resident Travel Document.

Step 2: Complete the Forms

Fill out the application carefully. Ensure that your personal information matches the details on your travel documents exactly.

Step 3: Gather Supporting Documents

You’ll need to collect:

  • A copy of your PR card (if available)

  • A valid passport or travel document

  • Two passport-sized photos that meet Canada’s photo specifications

  • Proof of your permanent resident status and ties to Canada (like tax documents, employment records, or lease agreements)

Step 4: Pay the PRTD Fee

The PRTD fees are CAD 50 per person. You can pay this online through the IRCC payment portal. Don’t forget to print the payment receipt and attach it to your application.

Step 5: Submit Your Application

Send your completed application to the Canadian visa office responsible for the country where you are staying. Each visa office may have its submission instructions, so it’s a good idea to check their website beforehand.

How Long Does It Take to Get a PRTD?

This is one of the most common questions people ask: How long does it take to get a PRTD?

The processing time for a PRTD can vary based on your location and the volume of applications at your local visa office. On average, it takes 2 to 8 weeks; however, some offices process applications more quickly.

To avoid delays:

  • Make sure your application is complete and accurate.

  • Include all required documents.

  • Pay your fee and attach the receipt.

Suppose you’re in a hurry because of an emergency. In that case, some visa offices might be able to expedite your application,  but this isn’t guaranteed.

Can I Apply for a PRTD Before Leaving Canada?

A good question, but the answer is no. You can’t apply for a PRTD before leaving Canada because it’s specifically meant for permanent residents outside the country who don’t have a valid PR card.

If you’re inside Canada and your PR card is about to expire or expired, apply for a renewal as early as possible to avoid any travel headaches later.

Do I Need a New PR Card Once I’m Back?

Yes. A PRTD only allows for one entry into Canada. Once you’re home, you should immediately apply for a PR card renewal. Hence, you’re ready for future travel without the stress.
